Maxie's Southern Comfort

Last night was our final night of "Fish Fry Club", a bunch of us who meet every Friday night during Lent and try out new places for fish fry. We have become extremely critical of each and every place that we go to, and last night was no exception.

(Side note: Wisconsin Fish Frys are extremely popular and happen almost every Friday, even outside of Lent, and most non-chain restaurants and taverns will serve a fish fry, mainly consisting of fish, usually cod or perch, fries or potato pancakes, coleslaw, a lemon wedge, and rye bread.)

I was first taken aback by their decor. Most wood was painted black, and the walls were painted red, which instantly reminded me of my sister's bedroom when we were growing up...she was 16. They also had gaudy chandeliers hanging from the ceilings, as well as 50's inspired bar stools which seemed quite random. The decor was much better suited for an asian fusion restaurant. I was shocked to hear that they were there for 4 years since everything looked random and thrown together.  After our VERY long wait for a table (it WAS a Friday night, but there seemed to be no urgency in seating people), we finally sat down and all ordered their "Damn-Good Fish Fry" for $14.95, by far the most expensive fish fry we've had.

The corn bread was exceptional and came with a orange honey whipped butter, delish! The fried pickle appetizers were good, but were no comparison to the ones at the Palomino. The cup of gumbo was alright, and the 8 pieces of shrimp for $7 appetizer seemed like nothing to write home about. After we were full from appetizers, as usual, or entrees came. The fish was good, but didn't live up to it's "damn good" name, nor did it have a strong beer batter flavor. The fries tasted homemade which was a nice change. We all gorged ourselves and had a great time...

But would I go back? Not too sure. My bill was $25 for the fish fry and half of an appetizer, which I found to be a bit high for what we got.

My final grade for Maxie's Southern Comfort is a C+. Pretty good food with room for MUCH improvement.
